“Operation Respect” Posted by: ohmra on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - 12:00 AM Each year since 2001, I’ve had the honor of coordinating “Operation Respect” with The Andersons stores in Toledo. Operation Respect collects faded, worn & torn flags to be respectfully retired as prescribed in the U.S. Flag code.
This year, Boy Scouts and members of the Pershing Rifles from the University of Toledo staffed the collection posts. Each year we accept 2,000 to 3,000 flags and occasionally, a flag is turned in along with a story.
It was surprisingly sunny & warm for an Ohio November. Even amidst the bustle of the Saturday morning errands at The Andersons, many people walked up to the Operation Respect volunteers with an air of quiet reverence, carefully handing their worn flags to the Scouts & soldiers… usually with a quiet smile, a soft, “Thank you.”
Probably a hundred flags had already been turned in when a gentleman approached Pershing Rifle’s SGT Jasmine Tropf. He shook her hand with both of his and thanked her for her service. When he released her hand, there was a small, folded American flag in her palm. It was about 4 by 6 inches, stained & dirty. “This was my younger brother’s,” he said. “He carried it in his breast pocket in Vietnam. That’s where it was when he was killed there. Another soldier from his unit brought it back to me and told me he knew my brother would have want me to have it.” He paused a moment, then said, “I think it’s time to let go, I know my brother would want me to retire this the right way.” Then he walked away.
Probably 40 years have passed since this man lost his little brother. His loss was still felt, and a grateful brother wanted to honor his brother’s sacrifice once more. We don’t know his name but we will honor his service and the wishes of his older brother. In doing so, we also honor & commemorate the dedication & sacrifice of all our brothers & sisters in uniform.
I thought about what the American flag meant to that soldier. It was so important to him that he carried it to his death. I reflected on how soldiers in the OHMR dedicate their time & talents to serving, and it brought to mind the burgee flag of Ohio that was recently added to our uniforms. It’s also a symbol of the values we uphold and represents the fact that who wear it will do whatever it takes to protect and promote the rights & freedoms we hold so dear.
Some of us have served overseas in combat, and some of us have served solely here in Ohio. Nevertheless, I believe all of us share the selfless spirit of our nation and are thankful to be an American.
Have a safe and blessed Veterans’ Day.
Jim Nowak, 1st VP, OHMRA

Ohio Military Reserve Association Activities at Annual Training 2009 Posted by: ohmra on Friday, October 16, 2009 - 04:04 PM To: All Ohio Military Reserve Association Members
From: Roger Lee Patrick, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer
Date: 29 September 2009
Re: Ohio Military Reserve Association Activities at Annual Training 2009
I am pleased to report that another successful AT has come to an end. One of the many benefits of serving in my capacity as your Secretary-Treasurer is the ability to meet and talk with each of you while at the association’s table during lunch each day and at the after dinner social event on Thursday night of AT. This year I was unable to attend the social on Thursday due to my attendance at mandatory training each evening in Delaware, Ohio. My dual commitments made for a difficult balance between my certification requirements with the state and my duties as an officer in the Ohio Military Reserve, however, the challenges have been met.
As annual training ends, the planning for the OHMRA Annual Meeting begins and Association President Ken Ringold and the rest of the board are looking at potential dates, places and activities to make your association meeting in Spring 2010 worthwhile. This is the perfect time for you as members, who are interested in stepping up and taking on the challenges of becoming an officer of this great association, to start thinking about running for office. All offices will be up for election by majority vote of those in attendance at the annual meeting. The offices open for election are President, 1st Vice-President, 2nd Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer.
Other non elected positions that need to be filled are Legislative Liaison and Chaplain. These are made by appointment of the incoming President upon taking office. The incoming President may also appoint an advisory board if he feels necessary to assist him in matters such as membership, etc.
At annual training this year, we signed up 21 NEW members and obtained approximately 22 renewals. We are currently at 135 Active Members, which is not bad and represents app. 25% of the total OHMR service members. However, as your voice, the association would like to have each member of the OHMR both Active and Retired, as well as those on the Individual Ready Reserve and MOBDES status, enrolled as members. There is something to be said about strength in numbers.
The common question that I get is “What do I get out of being a member and what does the association do ?”. Well, as I stated before, we serve as your voice in promoting what the Ohio Military Reserve is and what core values our soldiers value. In doing so, this year President Ringold and other members reached out to the legislative body of both the House of Representatives and the Senate and asked them to come to AT and see firsthand what Ohio’s finest volunteer military members do on a routine basis. I am proud to say that at least 3 members did attend and walk around to see what you do and some made time to talk to soldiers individually. This is important for us because as you may know, our small budget was cut further because of budget constraints at the state level. The Ohio Military Reserve will be able to move forward even further if the legislature has a core of its Representatives and Senators fighting to provide for us more in the budget. The Legislative Commission that was conducted a couple of years ago was a good start to the transformation we are seeing today.
The association also benefits its members through fundraising and providing grants for the benefit of all members. Some past projects that were done by the association through the work of its members were:
· Accepting donations for the purpose of buying Search and Rescue Equipment for the 5th Brigade in 2008.
· Making a matching grant to the G3 section for the purpose of buying shoulder cords to be presented to soldiers passing the MOSQ skills test at AT 2008.
· Sponsoring the Social Event held at the end of Annual Training, each year, after the AT Dining In.
· Assisting in providing the entertainment for the Annual Dining In
· Creation of a Challenge Coin, specific to the Ohio Military Reserve, for purchase by members to show pride in their service to the State of Ohio.
There are probably some projects that I failed to mention, but I just wanted to illustrate a few. Our financial position is improving but we are nowhere near the position that a organization of our size and purpose needs to be at. One of the main things that I constantly focus on is ways in which we can improve our financial position. If you have a fundraising idea, then please let me know. Some suggestions were provided at AT and the board is going to review them to see which ones will be feasible for us based on the number of persons who are readily available and willing to help in each project in light of time constraints and resources needed.
Again, it is my pleasure to serve as you Secretary-Treasurer for this second straight year. The quarterly financial report will be submitted to the Board during the first half of October as this quarter closes September 30th. Any member that wants a copy for their review may request a copy from my by sending your request to : 2950 Voeller Circle, Grove City, Ohio 43123 or e-mail your request to me at RPatrickLaw@columbus.rr.com
Fraternally,

Year of the NCO Posted by: ohmra on Monday, July 13, 2009 - 12:00 AM As you may know this year 2009, is the year the NCO. With this in mind I'm sending out this letter to all members of the Ohio Military Reserve Association. As the newly elected second vice president, it is my firm belief that this association if supported can get us through the upcoming and difficult times of new leadership
As an enlisted soldier from more than 40 years of service to my state and my country I have watched the NCO corps grow and grow, with better training more professionalism they are truly soldiers the 21st century. I know that we all share the burdens of unacknowledged service to our state and country, but is by no means reflects the true worth and respect for fellow service members on active duty in foreign countries. I firmly believe the new TO, when it is augmented will greatly becoming a tighter more organized unit.
The President of the Association has sent me an e-mail, requesting my ideas on how we can gain more active members and keep the lines of communication open. With this in mind I am suggesting that each battalion and each company senior NCO be named by its commanders as a representative to the members of his unit for the Association. This could be a command Sergeant Major, first Sergeant or platoon sergeant, as these men are the leaders and most likely to be in contact with them in a daily basis.
I hope to be seeing all of you at AT this year and I will be representing our association and be willing to sit and talk with all my comrades in arms about the challenges before us.
Respectfully:
CSM (r) Jerry Reynolds
2nd VP Association OHMRA

From the New OHMRA President Posted by: ohmra on Sunday, June 21, 2009 - 12:41 PM To all Ohio Military Reserve Association members,
I spent the last week trying to come up with some inspiring words of wisdom to motivate everyone for this coming year without much success. What I did come up with is that we have a lot of work to do. What I mean by we, is that this is your Association and it requires everyone to be involved to be successful.
"What does the Association do?"
1) Serves as an advocate to promote the OHMR to our public officials.
2) Maintains an Education and Assistance fund.
3) Raises money by soliciting donations, through membership fees, and fundraisers such as the corn hole tournament and challenge coin sales.
4) Last year the Association helped pay for outside training at AT along with the Commander’s Party following Dining In. This years project that we would like to adopt is to buy an AED for the 3rd Medical detachment.
"What can I do to help?”
1) If you are not a member, join the Association.
2) If you are a member, make sure your dues are paid up and volunteer to help.
3) Encourage others in your unit to join.
4) Write a letter to your State legislators introducing yourself and telling them who the OHMR is and what our capabilities are. If you are not sure what to say (or not to say) we will post a letter on the website that you can use.
I think everyone should take a minute and reread last years President Jim Nowak’s letter that is posted on this site. His comments remain as relative this year as they did then.
We have a lot of changes in store for us in the coming year with a new TO expected in the not to distant future along with new leadership for “Ohio’s Own”. We would like congratulate COL Charles Rowell for his selection as Corp Commander and COL Richard Iott as Deputy Commander and we look forward to their guidance and direction for the OHMR as we make the transition in the coming year. We would be remiss if we did not thank MG Charles Hollar for his many years of service and leadership to the OHMR and offer a hearty “Hooah” for a job well done.
I also would hope that everyone would make it a point to thank Jim Nowak, Michael Lanzilotta, John Knuckles, Jerry Carter, Mike Moran, Tim Holly, Ron Meyer, Sarah Reeseman, and Roger Patrick for all their hard work for your Association over the past year. With everyone’s support and help we will continue to build upon their efforts going forward.
If you should have any suggestions, comments, or advice, please contact any one on the board. We will update the site as more information becomes available, so check back periodically. I strongly urge all of you to get involved and help make this a successful year.
Ken Ringold
